Whispers of the Forest and Land
Fairy Tales from Hiiumaa
“These are not just stories for children. They are stories that children let the adults borrow, if the adults promise to listen.”
A timeless collection of 14 whimsical animal tales from the Estonian island of Hiiumaa, for both children and adults alike. Blending fairy-tale magic with playful humour, these stories reveal a world where animals talk, misbehave, and sometimes surprise even themselves.
Among them are a stubborn boar, a linnet quick with song, a moose who looms large, a weary postman, and even a king who rules beneath the lake. Written to be read aloud — so children drift off smiling and adults linger in the hush.

About the Author

I have spent most of my life on Hiiumaa, a quiet Estonian island tucked between vast forests and stormy seas. Rumor has it I was once a child myself, growing up with the stories told by grandparents. They always insisted that every tale must hold just enough truth to keep the lies standing. Guided by that idea and a wry island sense of humour, I have written fairy tales that, I am thankful, are much loved by children across Estonia.
Now, for the first time, a selection of these tales appears in beautiful English — complete with my own old-school, hand-drawn illustrations.
